You start by finding a low area where water is most likely to be underground; failing this, at the base of a slope works. This method works in deserts so you can’t go wrong picking an area but the idea is to get optimal water out so pick the best likely area. The area should also get a lot of direct sunlight most of the day. Dig a bowl-shaped hole big enough so that your plastic sheet will overlap the edges a few inches on all sides. About three feet wide and two feet deep is considered optimal, so carry at least a 5 ft. square size sheet with you, if you can. The cheap painters drop cloths available at hardware stores work good too and are already pre-folded for you. Dig the hole with sloping sides about the equivalent of 2/3 deep as it is wide. Make the sides of the hole a little higher than the surrounding ground. In the bottom, dig out a hole of the correct size to place the bottom of whatever size container you have to hold it upright.
