“Timothy, we’re here.” Colton gently shakes me out of my slumber.

I guess I managed to fall asleep after all. I stifle a yawn. The SWAT team has already piled out of the van and it’s just the two of us inside. There’s a crowd outside, and I can just spot what looks like a few dozen news vans lined up along the curb down the street.

I take a deep breath as my heart rate spikes. “Ready?” I ask, glancing sidelong at Colton.

He shakes his head. “Are you sure about this?”

I look away. There’s some doubt. I could be completely wrong about this. I could have misinterpreted everything completely. But when I go over it in my head, it all makes sense. There’s no other explanation that brings all of the pieces together.

“As sure as I can be,” I say, finally looking back at Colton. “You don’t have to do this.”

“He asked for us both, remember? Besides, I’m not letting you go in there alone,” he smiles softly at me.

I’m reassured by his words. I don’t think I would’ve had the nerve to charge in there head on without him by my side. I’m not exactly feeling very lion-like right now.

We slip out of the van and skirt around the outside of the crowd.

There are cops and news people covering every side of the building. There’s no way we’re going to be able to get in there without being spotted.

“Rand! What the hell are you doing here!?” A familiar voice shouts at us through the crowd. We turn in time to see Colton’s captain storming toward us. “I told you two not to come anywhere near this place, didn’t I?”

At first I thought he was angry, but now that he’s closer I can see concern in his eyes. He’s worried about us. But especially about Colton.

“You feel responsible for what happened to Clinton, don’t you?” I blurt before either of them can say anything. “That’s why you’re always micromanaging Colton.”

The captain furrows his brow and looks away from us.

“Sir?” Colton prompts.

“I knew he was getting in too deep,” the captain admits. “He was off his game. Acting erratic but...I didn’t do anything about it. I didn’t realize how entangled he was with Frank. I just thought, maybe he was getting high on the side or something. I didn’t...he was a good cop, a good guy, who looked out for his fellow cops. I didn’t want to punish him for trying to cope with a hard job. It...it was a bad call. I was a young captain, maybe too young. I wanted the men under my command to like me, to be friends with me. So I let things slide.” He meets Colton’s gaze. “I’m sorry, Colton.”

Colton flexes his jaw. I can see a dozen different emotions flash through his eyes before he speaks. “I’m not my brother, Captain. I’m not going to make the same mistakes he did.”

“Why are you here then?” the captain asks, glancing across the parking lot toward Omega for Hire.
