Alamosa was Rio Grande’s “change-of-gauge” location where trains, both standard gauge and narrow, were broken up or made up. The property was well groomed and the yard often a busy place. D&RGW’s depot is at left.

The illusion of high speed. The maximum authorized speed between Alamosa and Antonito was twenty-five miles per hour, a rule breached a bit on occasion. “Dog houses” on locomotive tenders were for the pleasure of the head brakeman; they were hardly commodious.

Nocturnal slumber in the Alamosa roundhouse for Rio Grande’s narrow-gauge locomotives was perfectly appropriate, but in the wee hours of the morning fires would be lit and these old warriors called to duty.
