Chapter Twelve
Diana initially thought her perspective was all wrong, but as they got closer to the main cabin, she could tell that the man standing on the front porch was an absolute behemoth. Trying to distract herself from gazing upon the ogre, she instead waved and called out hello to members of the community, all of whom seemed to be overly excited at their arrival.
âThis is a happy bunch,â she whispered to her husband.
âA little too fucking happy if you ask me. Did you get a look at the dude on the porch? Heâs huge.â
âDo you think thatâs Brannigan?â Diana asked.
âNo idea, but I do know that he makes me nervous. Shit, Iâm over six feet tall, and I know Iâm going to look like a kid next to him.â
Diana painted on a smile as they approached the steps of the cabin, but like her husband, she was beginning to feel a little nervous. She wasnât one to make snap judgments about people, but she had a definite feeling that the man on the front porch was not someone who took a lot of shit.
The big man stepped down to greet them, the wooden stairs groaning and bending under his weight. Reaching out a hand to Diana, he said, âMaâam, a pleasure to meet you. Iâm Quentin.â
She expected that her hand would buckle under the strength of his grasp, the bones reduced to nothing but dust, but his grip was surprisingly gentle. Diana couldnât help but notice the crude tattoos on his arm. She had seen enough inmate patients in her time to know that the ink was of the jail variety, which only further raised her concerns about his nature. She believed in second chances, though, so she promised herself to give Quentin the benefit of the doubt.
Diana watched as the Hulk turned his attention to Ryan, wondering how her husband would react in the presence of an apex predator male. She smirked to herself as Ryan sucked in his gut and puffed out his chest, going in for the handshake with some gusto. The grimace that followed made it clear than Quentin had not been quite so gentle on her man.
âPlease follow me,â Graves said with a little bow. âMr. Brannigan is waiting to meet you.â
As Graves stepped aside and allowed them to step inside the cabin, Diana let out a little gasp. She wasnât sure what the interior would look like, but she certainly did not expect to see a replica of a private club for men, with leather chairs, bookcases, Native American art, and a roaring fireplace all adding to the look. Diana was also a little surprised to see that the man sitting behind a desk in front of the fire wore a three-piece suit and tie with matching pocket square. She had expected more Paul Bunyan than George Clooney, but Brannigan was definitely more of the latter.
Brannigan leaped out of his office chair, rubbing his hands together excitedly and smiling broadly. âAh, the Richies are here, how wonderful,â he said.
