Chapter 10

“Charlie?” He raised his head from his palm to see Suzie standing in front of his table. Three beers in him and no food, Charlie was just beginning to feel a slight buzz.

“Can I sit down?” He used his boot to push out the chair for her but didn’t want her to join him.

Instead of choosing the chair across from him, she moved his hat aside and sat adjacent to him. Scooting closer, she rubbed his back affectionately. “Butch is an ass. We all know that.”

“I did wrong. I did wrong by Vernon.” Charlie tried to sit up in his chair, tipping the last drop of beer onto his tongue from an empty glass.

“Dad loves you like a son.”

“Not no more.” He rubbed his face. “Where’s my manners. Let me buy you a drink.”

“Thanks, Charlie. Just white wine, please.”

He nodded, standing up and walking to the bar. “Wine and another beer.” He put cash on the counter. The bartender handed him two glasses. “Keep the change,” Charlie said, carrying the drinks back to the table.

“Thank you.” Suzie took her stemmed glass from him.

“You’re welcome.” Charlie sat back down and sipped his fresh beer. “So? What did your mom and pop say? Hm? Are they going to fire me?”

“No. I don’t think so. I think Dad was surprised. Like we all were.”

Charlie covered his eyes with one hand in embarrassment.

“Don’t worry. We all love and support you.”

“Suzie, I don’t even know what I am yet.” He leaned his elbows on the table. “I… This fella, he’s…he’s…”

“Your boyfriend?”

“No. I mean. He’s the first, well, second man…I mean, I didn’t go with another man before him. I just…” He shook his head. “Never mind. I can’t spit out the gory details. I’m a gay boy. There. I admitted it.”

“And you can be gay. It’s okay.”

“No. It ain’t okay to do what I did out in the open. That kind of thing is for the bedroom. I know that. It’s just…just this guy…this fella, he’s…”

“Gorgeous?” she laughed as she replied.

Charlie smiled at her silly giggle.

“Like wow!” She fanned herself. “Where did you guys meet?”

“Suzie Norman, I cannot believe how well you are taking this.”

“Charlie!” She whacked his shoulder playfully. “Sherlane and I are going to college in the big city now. We meet all kinds of people. Dad didn’t teach us to hate nobody.”

“No. He did a good job raising you two.” Charlie squeezed her hand. Just then, he noticed a man standing near them. Charlie leapt to his feet and gaped at Roman, who was wearing his clothing, and everything was tight on the big man.

Suzie spun around to look.

“Charlie…we need to talk.” Roman appeared very nervous, and Charlie knew why.

“Join us.” Suzie gestured to the open chair. “Don’t be afraid. Charlie, introduce me.”

“Suzie, this is Roman.” Charlie walked closer to Roman, who wasn’t wearing shoes, just in stocking feet. “What the hell are you doin’?” he asked privately. “You change into a wolf or crow in here and them good ole boys will be on you with pool sticks.
