Bash had to hand it to Sheriff Hayes. While the three of them grabbed burgers and fries on the boardwalk, they watched as he ordered the beach cordoned off with police tape and put up large signs declaring it closed.

“Well, that’s something, at least,” Bash said as they made their way back to Trinkets. “Maybe that will keep someone from getting hurt while we figure this all out.”

“I hope so.” Lily pulled her coat closer around her, crossing her arms. He could tell she still felt bad about manipulating Luke and the mayor—he did too, if he was completely honest—but they really had no other choice.

“It’ll be okay,” he said. “It’ll wear off eventually, right? Like it did with us?”

“I’ll remove it in a few hours. Just had to get the ball rolling.” Her hair was tossed by the wind and she tucked a lock behind her ear. “Once they’ve established their path, it will be natural for them to continue along it.”

“Remove it? Will you have to sing again?”

Lily shook her head. “No, removing it’s much easier than creating the link. Like cutting a cord instead of braiding it.”

“But you didn’t have to do that with us,” Bash said, eager for more answers now that Lily seemed to be open to questions.

“You have to realize you two are the exception, not the rule.” She smiled at Wyatt. “You both must have pretty strong wills.”

The boy grinned in response, and Bash pulled him into a headlock, rubbing his knuckles on his head. “I know this one is strong-willed.”

“Hey, knock it off, Uncle Bash!”

Bash released him as they turned the corner onto Main Street, and Wyatt swiped a hand through his hair. “Hey, Lily, can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

His mouth twisted, like he was trying to find words. “When we met . . .”

“Yeah?” she said slowly.

“Did you really do what you said you did?” His words came out in a rush. “Or was it what I said I thought you did?”

“Wait, what?” Bash asked. “What are you talking about?”

“Nothing,” Wyatt said. “It’s just a question.”

“I think you already know the answer,” Lily said.

“I do?” He looked extremely excited.

“You do.”

“Cool.” Wyatt’s voice was filled with awe.

“Can someone please tell me what in the world you’re talking about?” Bash asked.

Wyatt opened his mouth to answer, but looked to Lily for permission. When she sighed and gave him a little nod, he leaned close to Bash and said quietly. “Lily can fly!”

Bash blinked at Wyatt, then Lily, unsure how to respond.

“Not technically,” she said with a diffident shrug. “I don’t have wings.”

“Right,” Bash said flatly. “Of course you don’t.”

“So how do you do it?” Wyatt asked as they neared Trinkets and he yanked the door open. “Is it like Superman, or do you manipulate gravity or what?”

“Manipulate gravity?” Lily repeated.

“He reads a lot of science fiction,” Bash said, following her into the shop.

“Oh, well, no. No capes. No gravity manipulation.” Lily waved to Eileen, who was on the phone behind the counter. “I ride the air currents.
