They were back in the same woods Kealin was in before he was captured, but not in a deeper portion of them. Ordak seemed to know where they were, or he was just that confident in their path.

"There is a village, simple farmers. They'll have a place for us to rest and figure out our next step, but it will be midday before we get there at this point," Ordak told him.

The sky was red and purple. The smell of ash and smoke was thick this morning compared to the last.

"Damn volcanoes. I swore I'd never come this far south again."

"I have little dealings with volcanic lands."

“Yeah, I'm sure Urlas was not volcanic at all. Taria isn't either."

"You know of Urlas?"

"The realm within another realm. I heard about it. Never went there. Did you forget that I'm friends with Evurn and Aeveam?"

"I just didn't realize you knew so much of me."

"I don't. I just knew this time where they . . ." He paused. "Nope, never mind. I do not deal well with remembering what not to say. Much better with a blade."

"I did not know them until very recently."

"There is much manipulated that even you do not know of, but it isn't important. I, too, had a moment where I swore I'd never come back to these Shadowlands. But Evurn and I go back to a much different time. The lands were much more peaceful then by the standard set now. The old clans were strong. Wardis was actually a powerful ally of the empire and not the unorganized lot ran by a half-elf they have become.

"You know of the Stormborn, but Misla was an ordeal that changed everything for me. Misla was when I lost my desire to explore and try to fight other battles. I still hold kinship with the dragon riders, but even they are not as they were before."

"There are still dragon riders in these lands?"

“Few, but they exist. Their kingdom is fractured just like the empire. It is all shams, I tell you, all shams. No honor is left in this world. Eliadel was one of the last, but I know there was talk of the empire attacking there. That'd anger Evurn."

Kealin noticed that Ordak had found a pathway leading into a glade with several large white trees, much larger than any others around them.

"The 'White Garden' glade. Not too far from where we need to be. This road will take us directly to the village. I guess I underestimated how far we were from it."

As they passed through the glade in the early morning light, fairies fluttered about, but several were lying on the ground. Ordak stopped, kneeling and picking one of them up.

One of the trees were split open, and thick red mucous poured out from the broken trunk. There was a simmering fizz rising in the air that the other trees were drawing in.

"Blood magic," Ordak cursed. "There were once tree people here. Long ago, yes, but this was a holy place for them.
