Chapter 16

They sat at a table far from Arabella. Thankfully, Eldridge took the seat where the severed head remained within eyesight. Freya wasn’t sure she would have been able to peel her eyes away from the macabre figure.

“He’s not going to poison us, is he?” she whispered.

“I don’t think so, but you were exceedingly rude to him so one can never know.” Eldridge crossed his arms over his chest and glared at her. “Why can’t you ever trust me? I said to woo him. Not to call him an old man incapable of magic.”

“I didn’t say he was incapable of magic.” She didn’t think. Freya could admit she’d gotten a little carried away in their banter.

It had seemed like the Magician was enjoying himself, though! How was she to know that he might get insulted? That’s how he would have been treated in the mortal world. A little ribbing. Some fun jesting from a much younger woman. He had appeared to enjoy the comical moment.

Now, she wondered if it was all a big show so he could go behind the curtain near his desk and get poison to put in their tea. He was a magician, after all. No one would know where the Goblin King and herself had gone. It wasn’t like Claude would remember and tell Arrow.

They were on their own here.

Cheeks burning, she wiggled lower in her seat. “I guess we just hope it’s not poison, then?”

“If we’re lucky,” Eldridge snarled.

The curtain flipped open and Soren came back out with a pot of tea in one hand and three teacups floating in front of him. “I’m not going to poison either of you. You’re both so dramatic.”

Freya rushed to help him with the cups, her chair screeching on the floor in her hurry. She snatched all three out of the air and gently set them down on the table. “You could have asked for help, you know.”

The Magician smiled at her, but there was an edge in his smile that made her a little frightened. “Trust me, Miss Freya. If I needed help, I would have asked for it.”

She supposed he wasn’t the type of person who needed help from anyone. “Well, you have survived this long on your own in the faerie realms. I don’t think I’m the one to question you on whether or not you need help.”

“And don’t you forget it.”

Soren set the teapot on the table and took a seat with them. There was one chair left empty, and Freya had a sickly feeling that it might be for Arabella. The Magician didn’t bring his head over to the table with them, but there was still a presence in that chair that she could feel.

He took a long time pouring the tea. He made sure there were enough tea leaves in each cup and set a small mesh net down afterward. It was a rather clever contraption that would save them all the bitter taste of fresh tea leaves. Once he had poured the hot water, Soren clasped his hands and sighed.
