Chapter 27

Isa

When Isa reached for the handle of the door to the carpenter shop the next day, it swung open before her fingers could close around the doorknob. Dai’s frame filled the doorway before he stepped back and ushered Isa and Liam inside.

He cast a glance up and down the street as Isa and Liam filed in before shutting the door and locking it.

“Follow me.” He barely spared a glance for either of them before taking long strides to the back of the shop. Instead of stopping in the workroom like he had the night before, he continued to a stairwell tucked into the corner. He held that door open for them, then locked it behind them.

He edged past Liam and Isa in the stairwell, taking the steps two at a time. Isa and Liam shared a glance. Liam gave her a smile, but it was small and tight—he’d been tense ever since returning from his scouting mission the night before. He’d told Isa of his success, of finding Evandren; it seemed to have shaken him, and he was not quite the lighthearted man she’d grown accustomed to. But despite her reluctant offer to come meet Dai alone this morning, Liam had joined her. His presence was steadying, even when somber. She was grateful to have him at her back.

Liam crossed his arms and leaned against the wall next to the door. “Can we take this to mean you will be helping Isa?”

Dai hurried over to his clay stove and pulled off a steaming tea kettle before answering. “I’ll help you,” he said, still facing the wall in front of him. “But you have to follow my rules.”

“All right,” she said.

“First, I’ll need to see”—Dai grimaced—“your magic.” He spoke in a low tone as if the walls had ears.

Isa pursed her lips. Of course he would need to see it. He couldn’t help her if he didn’t know what was happening.

“All... all right.” She cast a nervous glance toward Liam. He gave her an encouraging nod.

She didn’t have to do something big. Just enough to show Dai what her magic could do on a basic level. That wouldn’t be a risk to Liam. She could control a little light.

She pulled in a deep breath and slipped her bracelets off. Liam took them from her. Before she could doubt her actions further, she reached for her magic. As if eager to be let out after her avoiding it for days, it sprang too quickly to her fingertips, bursting into life in a globe above her hand. She prodded at it, trying to shift it into the shape of a dagger. At first it seemed to
