Dinner was about as awkward as Eli had expected, with Maxime draped over Rune, who seemed amused by his blatant flirting. Every time Maxime touched Rune’s arm, marveling over his muscles or how soft his skin was, Eli clenched his teeth a little harder, but Rune didn’t push him away, didn’t ask him to stop. He just ate his quinoa and salmon and discussed diet plans with Juliet and smiled at Eli when their eyes met.

Juliet seemed almost charmed by him, something Eli hadn’t thought possible. She propped her elbows on the table and had a serious discussion about a new diet fad sweeping through Europe, and its potential for burning fat and building lean muscle. Maxime had both hands wrapped around Rune’s bicep, his head on Rune’s shoulder as they talked, but Rune didn’t even seem to notice.

Eli met Noemi’s eyes. She looked as miserable as he felt.
