THE day after the summer school camp was a public holiday. Just as I feared, I discovered my piano skills had dulled a little. Normally, I would practice for four hours on weekdays and eight on my days off. Merely taking a single day off seemed to set me back months. I wanted to cry at this cruel reality.

If the short summer school camp made me regress this much, what’s going to happen during the longer school trips?

There are pianists out there who dislike practice, going as far as to publicly announce that they practice for less than one hour every day. But that’s something only the chosen can boast about. As I lacked any innate talents myself, my only option for getting better was to practice, practice, practice.

Half-crying, I rehabilitated the strength and maneuverability of my fingers with scales and arpeggios. Taking care not to stiffen the back of my hand into a rigid position, I loosely spread my entire palm. While I had strong fingers, my left hand’s ring finger and pinky finger remained the weakest no matter how much I tried to toughen them. I repeated the scales as many times as necessary so that all my fingers hit the keys with the same power, bringing out sounds of equal volume. Next, I focused on the accent. Then the staccato. Finally, I upped the tempo speed.

KNOCK! KNOCK!

Someone knocked on my door after I’d been practicing the basics for about two hours.

“Mashiro, you have a call from Kon.” Hanaka worriedly looked in my eyes as she handed me the phone. “There’s no need to panic and rush, Mashiro. Don’t worry. You’ll get the hang of it again in no time.”

Hanaka understood the reason I didn’t want to go to camp.

“Yeah…sorry, Sis. Weren’t you studying? Sorry for being so loud.”

“I’m fine! Don’t worry about me. Check this out. It’s what I use when I’m studying.” She lifted the headphones dangling around her neck and grinned.

She had downloaded a CD called, “Classical Music to Make You Smarter” onto her cell phone. She was trying her best to do well on her entrance exams in her own way. Talking to my cheerfully optimistic sister always improved my mood and gave me courage. Feeling better, I unmuted the phone.

“Hello? Kon?”

“Oh, Mashiro, hello… Sorry about Kou. You wouldn’t believe how shocked I was to hear that he went as far as crashing your summer school camp. I’ve been feeling really bad about how my slip of tongue brought that disaster on you.”

Judging from what Kon said, Kou went back to the Genda estate and reported everything he had done from the beginning to the end.

“Don’t be sorry! It actually turned out to be a real lifesaver for me! All thanks to you, Kon,” I exclaimed, voicing my real feelings on the matter and heard her sigh with relief.

“I’m glad to hear it. I also heard from Kou that you went to the Narita estate, Mashiro?”

“Ah. Yeah. About three days ago? We happened to bump into each other after school and he invited me over.
