This was it. After nearly two years of trying to crack the alien vault, they had finally breached its shell. It wasn’t the first vault they had found within this ancient alien structure but was the third.

It was the first vault that had been entirely intact, however, meaning they had no easy access. Now that they had breached it, its secrets were now theirs.

The technologies they had discovered within the first two vaults was already proving to be a benefit to the Empire. Their flagship had been refitted with technological marvels which put it far above anything the other superpowers had in their fleet and soon every cruiser, frigate and destroyer within the core systems of the Empire would be refitted with the latest technologies and the Empire would indeed be on top.

Depending on what was in this third vault, the gap would only grow, though so far with the first two vaults she had not found what she was looking for. Her ex-husband had taken with him when he had fled, some kind of spherical object. As to what it was she had no idea, but it had looked important. Whether there were any more of them, she didn’t know, but she intended on finding out.

Her ex taking advanced technology in her mind should have been enough to warrant their pursuit and death, but the higher-ups had argued they were not in a position to stir up trouble. Admiral Janine Jexin had sought to do it herself, albeit in an unconventional way. If she had known it would take so many years she might not have bothered, but thankfully, the time had come and Preia Lomas, formerly Preia Roma-Karimi was on her way to kill him. Or be killed by him. It didn’t matter, or maybe it did.

With a smile, she once more thought about the look on his face when they took her life and he realised who it was. It was almost enough to make her feel giddy.

Wearing her environment suit, Jexin moved along the rocky passageway under escort. A new alien vault had been breached and she intended on finding out just what they had discovered. She didn’t often come down to the dig itself, tending to stay up in the facility that had been built above to oversee the excavation.

Rarely the archaeologists ever seemed to go above ground, always down here seeing what they could discover. For the last year and a half, though, there hadn’t been much. They had emptied the previous two vaults while trying to break into the third which had proved impossible. At least until now.

Stepping through a thick automatic security door, Jexin entered a large cavern filled with noise and activity. Ahead she could see where the cave met the metallic wall of the third vault. It had a nasty split in it where they had breached it and steps that ran up to the now open hatchway giving them full access. All around her were make-shift buildings and long metallic tables covered in all sorts of alien trinkets.
