Using a screwdriver, I removed and disassembled the tuners, then gave them a thorough cleaning.

After gluing the repaired back to the sides, I used clamps on the support blocks and long, strong rubber bands to hold it in place for drying.

The fretboard and body responded well to a sponge bath using a cotton rag and warm water with just a few drops of mild detergent.

Ukulele #2

In the late eighties I stopped at a garage sale to see what I could find. I’m a fan of old hand tools, so I was probably looking for a diamond in the rust to restore. I didn’t find any tools that day, but I did find a baritone ukulele in poor repair. The back had split along the grain and partly detached from the sides, but the neck and tuners were sound, and the bridge, saddle, and nut all looked good.
