prototype stage (have a working prototype but do not yet have earned revenue)

post-revenue stage (have customers and functioning revenue models, but not yet cash-flow positive)

growth stage (operating at scale and are typically cash-flow positive)

Table 6.1 shows that the majority of the programs in the EDP sample target ventures at the prototype or post-revenue stage, with a smaller number focusing on earlier idea-stage or later growth-stage ventures. This is not surprising given the stated objective of many accelerators; that of working with scalable ventures in order to expedite their growth. It is also corroborated by the manager quoted above, who goes on to say that ‘there usually tends to be a couple of outliers on the early stage that we see significant promise in – maybe they’re in pilot stage – but most of the pack is the same, with maybe one or two that are further along’. Looking across the two groups of programs shows that high-NFF programs are even more likely to target ventures in the prototype or post-revenue stage, while the low-NFF programs are somewhat more likely to target the earlier and later-stage ventures. It seems that the more successful accelerators are more faithfully targeting entrepreneurs whose ventures are in their most promising developmental stages.Table 6.1Venture stage targeted for high-NFF versus low-NFF programs
