âIs everything okay, Dad?â Gwen asks. âYou seem out of sorts.â
I smile at her. âIâm fine, sweetie. It was a busy day at the new job and Iâve got a lot to deal with. Thereâs nothing for you to worry about.â
âDid you meet a lot of your staff?â she asks.
âI had meetings all throughout the day to get to know some of them.â
The first one was disastrous.
âHowâs your new assistant? The one Gramps liked so much.â
Talk about rubbing salt in my wound.
âThatâs Maeve. She seems great.â
âHow old is she?â
âTwenty-five.â
Too young for me anyway.
âWhat does she look like?â
âWhy does that matter?â I ask.
âIâm curious.â
âSheâs got long blond hair.â Itâs the shiniest, softest hair in the world. âAnd blue eyes.â A vibrant blue that grabs hold of your attention and never relinquishes its hold.
âHmm. I pictured her being a brunette when Gramps talked about her.â
âThatâs funny. I did too.â
âNow that you own the team, does that mean I get to go to the home games?â she asks with a hopeful expression on her face.
âI suppose you can go to some of them. It depends on when they fall. You canât attend any game thatâs on a school night.â
âThatâs okay. When is the first game?â
âPreseason games run the last two weeks of September and the regular season starts the second week of October.â
She wrinkles her little nose. âBut thatâs so far away.â
âItâs less than three months until the season opener.â
âAwesome.â
âAnd between now and then, you have your summer break from school to enjoy.â
âGood point.â She shoots to her feet. âIâm going to tell my friends.â She leans in for a hug. âNight, Dad.â
âNight, Gwennie.â
She bounds out of the room like an excited puppy, leaving me alone with my thoughts of Maeve. I want to call her more than anything, but I know I shouldnât. I could send her a text. What harm would that do?
Iâm sorry about what happened this morning.
