Chapter 7

FRIDAY HAD come sooner than expected.

Sunday had been hell for me, and I had spent most of the day in my room under the excuse that I had a bad migraine. Aunt Hanny had been sweet, trying to wait on me, but I had wished she’d just leave me alone. Monday had been better, Gabriel leaving me a text message to let me know what he expected of me come Friday and where and what time he’d pick me up. I had wanted to call him but was afraid I’d make the situation worse.

Knowing that he was still interested in me managed to perk me up just a little. The essay he had demanded had been heavy on my mind. It seemed silly to me, having to write an essay like a schoolkid. It wasn’t until Wednesday when I realized that was the point. I had to admit to myself that I had handled the whole thing rather immaturely. Instead of being honest and confessing to my phobia like an adult, I had hidden in hope of being accepted, like a child. I still blamed my rough childhood for that one, but I needed to get past it.

So, now that Friday had come at me from out of nowhere, I was left sitting at my sluggish computer at one o’clock in the afternoon, the cursor blinking at me. I hadn’t written a thing, my mind blank. Time was ticking away, and I still needed to prepare myself for Gabriel. But this was important, and for the first time in a long time, I had no idea how to express myself. Words had always been my solace. When I was unable to speak my feelings, I poured my emotions into poems and English-class assignments.

I decided to at least start with the punishment itself. I detailed how I had originally thought that writing an essay was silly, but that I now understood the point of it. Once I got that out of the way, the words just started flowing, and before I knew it, I was finished. I read it several times over, perfecting the flow, trying to get all my feelings down in coherent sentences. It was three by the time I printed it.

It was as good as I was going to get it, so I set it on my bed, then collected the clothes I had prepared to wear this evening. If I were lucky, I wouldn’t be dressed for very long. I stopped downstairs to get a quick drink and found Aunt Hanny getting ready to leave for her Friday social outing with some friends.

“Hey, baby.” She smiled. “I put some meatloaf and potatoes in the fridge if you’re hungry. I’ll probably be home late tonight.”

I nodded. “Yeah, I might not be home at all.”

“Oh? Another school function?”

“Something like that.” I smiled tightly and kissed her on the cheek. I dug in the fridge and found the orange juice.

“Is everything okay, Joey?” she inquired. “You’ve been acting strange these past few weeks.
