Nocuous Plutonium
Despite various theories about the word plutonium, it is widely assumed that coincidentally its origin is linked to the Latin name âPlutoâ, the God of the dead and ruler of the underworld and from the Greek word ploutos, i.e. wealth. Probably, like a supernatural power imbibed from this Godly connection, plutonium is considered the most deadly poisonous substance on this earth. Scientists have candidly admitted that no other substance is as lethal as plutonium is. This is because it came from Uranium which was named after the planet Uranus and neptunium which was named after the planet Neptune. Plutonium emits neutrons, beta particles and gamma rays. According to the scientist fraternity, plutonium-238 (also known as Pu-238) is a radioactive isotope of plutonium that has a half-life of 87.7 years. It is a very powerful alpha emitter. This makes the plutonium-238 isotope ideal for use in Tadioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs) and radioisotope heater units.
The Nuclear era of modern history was the by-product of intense rivalry among fascist governments in Europe during and after the First World War. The German weapon project was an impending danger among the scientists who lived as refugees from Nazi Germany in other fascist countries. This decade of thirties saw a strong mistrust among these fascist countries about the new discoveries in the nature of atoms, including the existence of nuclear fission. When apprehensions were going around among many war-affected countries that the nuclear weapons were theoretically feasible, the British and United States Governments decided to work on it tirelessly to be ahead of all such eventualities. In this background, this project was transferred to the authority of the US army and code-named as Manhattan Project. The portion of this project related to the development of weapons was assigned to the Los Alamos Laboratory in northern New Mexico under the directorship of Physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is considered the creator of the atom bomb.
Plutonium is a radioactive silver metal which can be used to create or destroy. Initially after its discovery, it was used for destruction, but today the element is used mostly for creating energy throughout the world. According to scientific records, plutonium was first discovered in 1941 by scientists of the University of California, USA. This discovery was not shared with the rest of the scientist community until 1946, after the World War II. A paper related to this discovery was submitted to the journal, Physical Review, in March 1941 but it was removed when found to have mentioned that an isotope of plutonium, Pu-239 could be used to create an atomic bomb. However, it would be impossible to understand plutonium without understanding its origins, in a human context, as a bomb-making material. It is argued that plutonium is a man-made material. It could be a fact in a way but it is believed that plutonium existed before earth itself, in the depth of space as a by-product of supernovae, or exploding stars. This fact was further proved by the French Scientists in
