Due to recent events, memories of my birthplace have come to me with an unfamiliar intensity. To say I still miss home would be an understatement; itâs an emotion that language cannot contain. But Iâll do my best to find the words for those who should know the truth of our ancestral land.
Nubia was wonderful, where happiness suffused the air, where our joy electrified the ether. To the feet of Nubians, the brown-black earth was warm, abundant in vegetation, a fertile soil. We could readily pick guava and naartjies from our municipal gardens or the trees of a neighbor. We would exult in vibrant hues, citizens adorned in tunics and gowns and robes with shimmering wax-print patterns.
From my office window, I looked upon immaculate courtyards, the golden spires of our temples rising above all else. As I walked through the small villages surrounding our city center, I entered simple, refined homes with walls that glimmered. And beyond the villages, when I entered mountain caves, I gazed upon inscriptions carved in stone chronicling the efforts of our catalysts, those grand Nubian heroes who permanently changed the direction of our society. More than one thousand years ago, after violent tremors ravaged our land and homesteads, honored catalyst Komi Assan led our ancestors to create a capital city that endured for centuries. And even further back, more than three thousand years ago, honored catalyst Adwoa Celestine encouraged Nubians to explore the true range of our kinetic gifts, to better understand our potential.
For the citizens of Nubia were graced with abilities that many in the outside world would view as fantasy. We believed these gifts to be our birthright, tied to an uncorrupted communion with a bountiful universe. Some Nubians used their bodies to absorb energy from the sun, walking as nimbuses of gold. Others were able to send their presence across the sky. A young man with elemental gifts could touch the heart of his betrothed as she sailed to the other side of our isle, willing sea-foam to take his form and blow her a kiss. A family member could nurture the spirit of a grieving child who had lost a parent, sending the little one nighttime dreams of her mother singing a lullaby. O precious daughter, listen for my voice on the windâ¦
We were people of the mind, wielders of energy, healers, even shapeshifters on occasion, abilities that manifested depending on the individual. You may believe youâre reading the fanciful mutterings of a senile old man, but no, this was reality for Nubians. A glorious existence in a paradise that we kept in peace.
It was during this time of prosperity that one of the Great Storms descended, the likes of which weâd never seen. Nubia had survived all manner of hurricane and monsoon before, natural phenomena that had bowed before the power of our elementals, but this tempest was like a thing possessed, ravaging our city, eradicating villages. Those who controlled the elements were overcome, most sacrificing their lives so the rest of us could flee.
