When they reached the back, Tony said, "Look at the oak guys and tell me what you think." Tony pointed at the tree.

Parris shrieked before Sam could even register the strangeness; they had all stopped to stare at the tree that Sam now saw wasn't the oak he was used to. For one, their favorite tree wasn't so slim, and bare. So bare in fact, that he could see the dark foliage of the forest through its branches.

"The hell," Kane ejected, cocking his head as if he wasn't sure he was seeing right.

"That's not..." Gem pointed. "Is it?"

Tony replied, "Nope that's not the oak." He continued walking.

"Come on guys. You ain't seen nothing yet."

Sam followed Tony, feeling strange to leave the matter of the oak hanging. It made him certain there were more dangerous oddities lurking around them.

"You saying the oak transformed overnight?" Sam asked.

Tony did not look back.

"That is exactly what I'm saying," Tony replied sharply.

Sam was stunned by Tony's strident answer, but he followed him nonetheless, trudging to the mutated tree.

"Dunno what's weirder, a shivering letter or an oak that stripped naked," Kane said.

Upon reaching the tree, Sam confirmed Tony's claim of the tree’s transformation. He observed the smooth bark and leafless branches; the oak they knew was rough with countless leaves thereon.

“I smell ozone,” Parris said, sniffing the air. Suddenly made aware of the smell, Sam caught a whiff of the pungent odor. The scent was very familiar to Sam. Gem sniffled, then sneezed. It was the scent he associated with thunderstorms, sharp but slightly pleasing. It was the same scent that had overwhelmed him at Sally’s funeral after the lightning had irradiated her casket. Though he was in the exact spot by the oak he would have occupied had school been in session, he felt no familiarity now as they gathered by night. Kane withdrew the red parchment from his pants pocket.

"Let's get this done with," he said, stuffing his other hand into his pocket.

"Getting damn cold out here."

“Thought it was me alone,” Gem quipped, huddling deeper into her jacket. Sam saw the frost mushrooming from her mouth as she spoke.

When Sam and the others extracted their invitations, Kane continued," Sojourn to the tree of smoke and ash," he said. "I'm guessing this is the mentioned tree?" He glanced down at Tony who was stooping on one of the thick roots, looking at something.

"Yeah," Tony said. "This is it... don't know how the smoke and ash comes in but I'm pretty sure this is it."

"Hmmm," Parris sounded, narrowing her eyes at Tony.

"Kane continued, "Peer through the keyhole and wait and watch. Tony, care to explain?"

Tony stood quickly.
