Chapter 6

Zane paced at the front desk of the rehab center, hands stuffed in his pockets while he moved. He'd talked to Chad every day once he got his phone rights back, and he'd known something had happened during those few days, but he never asked what. He figured Chad would tell him if he wanted Zane to know.

"Hey, Zane."

He glanced up to see Chad strolling down the hallway toward him, a bright smile on his face. Relief rippled through him at how good Chad looked. There was still evidence of the hard drinking he'd done most of his life, but instead of having shadows and anger in his eyes and a constant downward tilt to his lips, there was hope creeping into his expression.

Not stopping to think, Zane took Chad into his arms, then hugged him close. Chad wrapped his arms around Zane's waist to lay his head on his man's shoulder. Zane inhaled deeply, taking in the clean scent of Chad's hair. They embraced for a minute longer before one of the nurses cleared his throat, and they broke apart.

"Sorry, Marcus."

"It's all good, man. Just couldn't let it go on any longer." Marcus grinned. "So this is your guy, huh?"

Chad shot Zane a shy glance as he shrugged. "Well, he isn't my guy yet, but he's my sergeant and my friend."

Zane bumped Chad with his shoulder. "We're getting closer to the other every minute. I'm sure when you get out of here, we'll be all the way there."

Marcus nodded. "Cool. Why don't you show him around for a little bit, Chad? When you're done, I can take him over to where he'll be staying for the weekend. Oh, and remember, dinner is at seven tonight instead of six."

"Thanks." Chad grabbed Zane's hand to drag him back the way he'd come. "I want to show you my room and the grounds. Also, Tabitha said she'd like to talk to you, which freaks me out a little bit because I don't know what she might be telling you."

Zane chuckled. "She can't tell me anything you talked about in your sessions. That's covered by therapist-client privilege--or something like that." He tightened his fingers around Chad's, then drew him to a stop in the middle of the corridor. "I'll wait until you tell me about your past. I want you to trust me with your secrets."

Cupping Zane's face, Chad smiled at him. "Maybe in a little while I'll be able to tell you. Tabitha and I are working through what happened. I have to learn how to let go of the anger and distrust that's haunted me for most of my life."

Zane pressed a kiss to one of Chad's palms, then stepped back. "I can accept that. Whatever you two are doing is working, and I'm willing to wait forever if it means that you heal."

"I'll always be an alcoholic," Chad pointed out, as he turned to head away.

"And I'll always be an addict. Those cravings aren't things we can cut out of our lives and miraculously never have to feel again.
