She was wandering, the obsidian path below her feet unforgiving in its frigidity. The ever-looming dark loomed at her back, and she fled from its caress, frightened. When it left her not, fear morphed into rage, and her rage became flame, and her flame struck a torch into brilliant light.

Light. Plunged into stiff flesh, unyielding sinew and bone. Overwhelming heat, fat black flies crawling over her skin, and more men than she’d ever seen in her life shouting, their eyes trained on she alone. She longed to call out to them, to reassure them, but her muscles wouldn’t cooperate, her tongue wouldn’t unlash—

Pressure, then pain, blooming at the back of her skull. If not for the heavy helm, her brains would be leaking down her back. This, finally, was what granted her the strength to turn.

There. A young man, hardly old enough to grace this plain, his arms trembling violently even as he notched his bow to strike again. No matter. This would be quick work.

She thundered toward the youth, unable to help the stretch of her mouth into a wild grin. He was running, the poor whelp, full on sprinting away. As she gained on him, she could hear his cries for mercy, his degrading little pleas. How pathetic, she thought, aiming her spear. It arced through the sky like the holiest of eagles, blessed by Zeus on high.

Her aim struck true. As her spear impaled the tender space between his shoulder blades, the boy dropped like a sack of grain. She jogged up to him eagerly.

Still the coward begged, though his voice was far weaker. She would fix that. The spear was warm from the sun as she drove it deeper into him, until flesh gave way to the dust of the ground. Roiling pleasure, so similar to that brought on by Beroe’s touch, made her shiver even as the boy’s voice faded and the crowd’s raised in cheers. Then came the strike of another arrow against her breastplate and already she was turning, seeking her next target —
