Point of View in Cooking with Images

Questions the preacher should ask when using an image in a sermon:

How wide a visual field am I showing listeners?

(Am I presenting the congregation with a wheat field in Kansas, or a display case in a museum?)

How deep a connection do I want listeners to have with this image? Do I want them to look at it from the surface? “The med students slip into the theater seats and look down on the surgery going on. They watch carefully. Dr. Green is an artist.”

Or do I want them to experience it more deeply? “You are a surgical nurse. You look on carefully. The patient was your Sunday school teacher when you were really needing a friend.”27

Remember, point of view is built into every image we present in our sermon recipes. The key is to understand what we’re doing. Just as a recipe fails if it has too many conflicting flavors, so we should guard against asking listeners to shift points of view too often and too abruptly.28
