Chapter Thirty-Three

Without slowing down, Thorn led the Iron Wolves forward as they assumed the new formation. With Thorn acting as the anchor, they began to spread to the sides, forming two wide wing shapes. The group they were approaching was not large but even as Thorn watched they began to multiply rapidly as more and more players logged in. The core group he had seen at first wore the gleaming silver armor of Sylith’s Silver Guard, but the other players appearing on the plain were geared like regular players, making Thorn wonder if they were mercenaries from other guilds.

It was clear that someone, probably Sylith, had anticipated him fleeing back to the valley and had planted an ambush here to try and cut him off, which just proved Duke Carlton’s insight correct once again. If the enemy managed to kill him he would be forced to respawn back in Stormwatch, which would not only make life miserable for him, but given Cherserrorth’s presence in the city, made it likely he would be out of the war for good.

The same was true for everyone in the Iron Wolf Army, so Thorn expected that the upcoming fight was going to be vicious. Battles between players were a completely different matter compared to most of the fights that Thorn had been involved in until now and he was just realizing how brutal they could be. With every death, some proficiency was lost, but if you could trap your enemy by restricting their spawn point, they either had to risk dying repeatedly or simply stop playing.

“Corvo, can you anticipate their targets for [Holy Strike]? I can disrupt the other players.”

“Yes, but remember, Sylith is coming and he was trading blows with Duke Carlton so he is probably really dangerous right now. Don’t get so focused that you miss his opening attacks.”

“I’ll pay attention.”

Flipping over to the team channel, Thorn began to give out orders to the Iron Wolves.

“This is going to be a running fight, so don’t get bogged down. The goal is preserving our lives, since we don’t want to be respawning in Stormwatch. Stay moving and don’t worry about killing them. Wing leaders, pull in on me and form up a wedge formation on my command. Center column, follow me in punching through the center. Remember team, we want to limit surface area as much as possible. Watch for stacked [Holy Strikes] and listen to Corvo’s commands on when to bubble.”

Only six hundred feet away at this point, Thorn’s mouth opened and he let out a long howl, using it to signal to his team that it was time to get ready. Behind him, the Children of the Moon echoed the call, causing the plains to fill with the howls of wolves. There appeared to be between fifteen and twenty thousand players stretched out on the plain, trying to block their way. Reacting to the Iron Wolves’ formation, they had spread out into a long line, hoping to use their superior numbers to bog down the Iron Wolves’ charge and stop their forward momentum.
