Chapter Thirty-Four
When Nails returned with the sack of greasy burgers and fries, Dallas had put in the Batman movie and turned the volume up loud enough to hear it in the shower. He couldnât hear the water running, and the bathroom door was cracked open about an inch.
âIâm back,â he shouted, setting the food down on the little table by the door and going back out to the car to get the two large Cokes. He came back in to the room, arranged the food and drinks on the table, and called for Dallas again.
Jack Nicholson bellowed from the TV. âHave you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?â
Nails hated this movie but left the TV on high anyway. He wanted to eat but not be rude and start without Dallas. He called for her a third time, sat at the table for a few minutes as the fries began to get cold, and stared at the TV. He really hated this movie. Worse Joker ever. He also hated cold fries. He yelled over the volume one more time. âDallas, Iâm back. I got the food. Come and eat.â
No answer.
Finally, he got up, crossed the room, and lightly rapped his knuckles on the bathroom door. âHey,â he said, âcome and eat.â
Still no answer, but the door eased open on its own, and he could see her through the steam. She stood with her back to him at the sink wearing only her bra and panties. The mirror was fogged up so she couldnât see him as she swayed to the Batdance booming from the TV. He couldnât stand that song, but somehow, at this moment, she made it work. All the curves heâd been trying to avoid looking at for days were fully exposed and on display. Her hair was wet and slicked back out of her face and she had a light sprinkle of summer freckles across her shoulder blades and back. As soon as he caught himself staring, Nails immediately dropped his head and studied the tile. He shouldâve backed away but he couldnât move. She mustâve felt his presence behind her because she spun her head around and looked completely mortified. She snatched a towel from the counter to cover herself, careful to keep her back to him, before turning and pushing him back through the doorway.
âOh my God, Nails. Knock much?â She slammed the door just inches from his face.
âThe fries are getting cold.â He looked at the floor. Wow, he thought. Thatâs all your idiot brain could assemble? The fries are getting cold?
âAsshole,â she yelled from behind the door.
Nails went to the table, sat down, and drank most of the Classic Coke from the large cup all at once. It was a very long time before Dallas came out and joined him. Heâd already finished his food. She was wearing a little black one-piece dress that tied behind her neck and hugged the rest of her, stopping at her thighs. After she turned the TV down, she sat opposite Nails at the table, crossed her legs, and picked up a cold fry.
