Colton: Look what I found while I was cleaning out my storage unit today.

The picture shows two action figures—Spider-Man and Venom—next to each other in Colton’s big palm.

I type out a quick response.

Veronica: I knew you were a closet nerd.

Next to me, Star clears her throat loudly. “I’ve gotta be real with you. If you’d told me Colton McKinley was sending you pictures of his toys, I would’ve pictured something way hotter.”

I giggle-snort and tap my shoulder against hers. “Dirty.”

“Do you want to explain?”

“Explain why Colton is sending me pictures of Spider-Man toys? You really have to ask when you’re the woman who left my Spider-Man-obsessed son in his care when I was sleeping?”

She turn up her palms. “I had to go.”

“You could’ve woken me up.”

The corner of her mouth twitches. “Yeah, but he was acting like an awkward teenager coming to visit his crush, and I wanted to draw that goodness out for as long as possible.”

I roll my eyes. “He was not.”

“Oh, yes he was. Colton’s hot, but until Monday night, I had no idea he could be adorable too.”

I glance at my phone again, at the picture of the toys that mean he was thinking about my kid, and remember the little fist bump he gave Jacks. My chest feels warm and too full. “Yeah, he can be kind of cute.”

Star squeals. “I knew it. Was he like this when you two hooked up, or was he all hot alpha, pulling out the seduction tricks?”

“The first time, it was my idea.”

Star’s spine goes ramrod straight, and I realize what I said as she points an accusatory finger at me. “You said the first time it happened. When was the last time?”

I hold a hand over my eyes, part my fingers, and mumble, “Yesterday.”

She literally bounces in her seat. “Yesterday?”

“And the day before that.”

“Yeah, you did!”

I drop my hand so I can glare. “Why are you like this?”

“I’m happy for you. That’s all.” She rubs her hands together. “And did he call you by someone else’s name this time?”

“Jesus. No. I would’ve kicked him in the balls.”

“But you didn’t. You played with them instead, am I right?”

“I hate you.”

“You love me. What happened? What made you go from he’s such a dick to I want his dick?”

“I’d gone too long without an orgasm, and it caused me to make bad decisions.” I bite back a smile and add, “Repeatedly.”

She howls. “Oh my God, I knew this was coming.”

“You did not.”

“Well, maybe I hoped. And listen to you, blaming it on orgasm deprivation when you two have always had sizzling chemistry.”

I narrow my eyes. “When we’re starving, we lower our standards about what we’re willing to eat. For example, I hate buffets, but if I haven’t eaten for a week, I’ll line up to eat some of that hovered-over grub and conveniently forget I might as well be licking a petri dish of bacteria.”

She presses her lips together, but her chest shakes with laughter. “You poor baby,” she finally says.
