The Crew

Cobain reached the Navigator first.

One man had jumped out and started firing with a gun in each fist and that was the last thing that poor son of a bitch would ever do. He didn’t know what had happened to the other man. He thought he’d hit him, but it was always better to be sure. He didn’t think there were more than two people in the vehicle either, but it was better to be sure of that as well.

Cobain circled the vehicle with his gun raised.

He saw the big guy in the passenger seat had suffered the same fate as his smaller friend but didn’t lower the weapon as he moved around the SUV.

He was glad he had decided to man his post on the hill across the street. If he hadn’t, he never would have seen the short guy sneak up and jam a knife into Doc Deaver’s back tire. Through the night vision goggles, the guy looked ridiculous crawling around since Cobain could see him clear as day. He could have put a bullet in the dude at any time, but Zeke wanted to find out who they were first. The way things turned out, he should have just shot him.

Zeke joined him at Anson’s body.

Cobain lowered the rifle and looked at Zeke. “Sorry.”

“For what?”

“Would’ve been nice to find out why he stuck the Doc’s tire.”

Zeke nodded. “Either way, we’re burned. Even if these assholes didn’t call the cops, someone heard the shooting.”

Cobain looked down the road and nodded. They weren’t alone on this street. The houses were far apart, but there was no way someone didn’t notice all the gunfire.

“Plan B?”

Zeke nodded again and they started moving.

Tucker was crouched behind Deaver’s truck in the driveway. Even if Anson had made it by Cobain and Zeke, Tucker would have lit them up.

Zeke looked at Tucker and said, “Plan B.”

Tucker shook his head, jaw tight. Plan B required moving cross-country and roughing it through the wilderness.

“Zane won’t make it,” Tucker said. “Deaver doesn't think we should move him at all, let alone cross-country.”

Zeke thought about it for half a second. Deaver had recommended not moving Zane, but they were planning to, anyway. However, having the stitches come loose as they got shaken and jostled going off-road would be a disaster.

With all this in mind, he said, “Plan C.”

“What’s plan C?” Cobain asked.

Zeke looked at the house. Doc Deaver and Belinda were coming out, figuring the shooting was over. Belinda had her gun drawn as if it wasn’t.

Zeke moved toward them. “Take my brother to your clinic. We’ll meet you there.”

Deaver blinked. “Wait, what?”

“I wasn’t asking.”

“My tire…”

“It should hold if you’re careful until you’re clear of this area. When you’re clear, you change it and go to your place with my brother.”

“No…”

“You brought them here. You owe me and I’m not the kind of man you want to owe.”

Belinda raised the pistol. “I suggest you rethink who you’re threatening…”

“Put a thumb anywhere near the hammer and my man will carve a canoe through the top of your skull.
