Weather permitting, golfers can tee up all year round in Chicago. The Chicago Park District’s public courses are open daily, dawn to dusk. At Jackson Park’s (South) premier 18-hole facility, the scenery alone will make you forget the bustle of the city. The nine-hole Sydney R. Marovitz (Waveland) Golf Course (Map 43) is usually busy, but it has great views of the lake. And Robert A. Black’s (Map 34) nine-hole, 2,339-yard, par-33 layout was designed by the renowned Dick Nugent. In addition, the park district operates three driving ranges and three learning centers, including one for juniors at Douglas Park.

The Forest Preserve District of Cook County offers 11 public courses in and around the city. Indian Boundary’s (Northwest) huge fairways and fast-moving greens make for fun play and golfers often catch glimpses of visiting deer. At Edgebrook (Northwest), bordered by mature trees along the Chicago River, the signature fifth hole—a 93-yard par three with an elevated green—offers a serious test of skill. Just 10 minutes from downtown, Billy Caldwell’s (Northwest) sharply undulating greens make it a great place to play a quick nine. Many of the city’s courses offer twilight specials, so bring your glow-in-the-dark balls if you’re looking to save some cash.

And, for a real urban golf experience, the privately owned Harborside International (South), host to some Illinois PGA events, offers two tricky 18-hole, Scottish-links courses open to the public in season. Private courses in the city include the Beverly, Ridge, and Ridgemoor country clubs and Riverside Golf Club. However, if you want to see Tiger Woods play, you’ll have to head out to the suburbs; the PGA tour visits clubs like Cog Hill in southwest Lemont and the members-only Medinah Country Club in the western ‘burbs.

If you prefer your golf a little smaller, in-the-know mini-golfers head to the Park District’s exceptionally cheap miniature golf course at Diversey (Map 44), or head down south to the ultimate in windmill-dodging action, supernatural-themed Haunted Trails Amusement Park (Southwest). Navy Pier (Map 3) also has a course, but the throngs of tourists with multi-colored balls makes it hard to recommend for the putt-putt purist.
