Metis and I walked the Muses’s garden while we waited. She stopped to admire a frozen Ares, arm raised to deliver a killing blow to me that never happened. She seemed to greatly enjoy looking at him so we walked to the bench and sat. It was serene and lovely here, but I couldn’t wait to enjoy the more tropical gardens at my new house—once all traces of Elvis were banished from the building.

I was grateful Pan and the Nymphs were absent today. Maybe they’d returned to the God Realm, or wherever it was Pan lived when he wasn’t here annoying us. I never asked him any details. Pan seemed contented with his life at last. Hermes was contented with his son. That was as good as it got among our kind. The rest was destiny.

Aphrodite strolled down the path wearing a sun hat, sunglasses, and enough sheer veils to cover every inch of her skin. “Hello, Darling. I’m here as requested. What can I do for the Goddess of the Doomsday Prophecy?”

I smiled in welcome. “Thank you for coming. I need your help again.”

“Didn’t the mark on your palm work?” she asked, pursing her lips in annoyance.

“No, that worked quite well.”

Her attention snapped from me to Metis. “Metis?” Aphrodite lowered her glasses to check and turned her bright gaze my way. “Is she your problem?”

I grinned. “No. She was a solution that didn’t work out the way I hoped.”

Aphrodite pushed her glasses back into place. “She’s dead, you know.”

Chucking, I nodded. “Yes, I know she’s dead.”

Metis narrowed her eyes. “Don’t worry, Aphrodite. I’m not mad at you anymore. I realized long ago that no spell of yours would have made your brother love me.”

“Love is not an absolute, Metis. Love is an inclination. What happens between two people is the purest form of magic and one that no one controls,” the Goddess of Love declared.

My hopes got dashed even before I asked my big question. “Are you saying there’s no such thing as a love spell?”

Aphrodite lifted both hands. “The short answer is no. Why? Are you still having trouble with your Dragon? They’re arrogant creatures, Atlanta. I don’t know what you see in him.”

I laughed. “My Dragon and I are fine. I wanted the spell for Athena.”

“Athena? The Goddess of War? The perpetual virgin?” Aphrodite’s musical laughter filled the garden air. I smiled when she put her hand on her stomach. “Oh, my goodness. That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard in years.”

I blew out a breath. “Once upon a time, she loved a Dragon. Zeus kept them apart and caused all kinds of trouble. The Dragon is still alive though, and so is my hard-headed twin. Gaia wants me to try and get them back together. I thought maybe a love spell would do it.”

Aphrodite shook her beautiful head. “A love spell might work temporarily, but when it passed, Athena would probably kill the person. Such spells are rare and dangerous.”

Crossing my arms, I sighed. “Well, I had to ask.
