Virginia City, Montana Territory. January 20, 1864.

On a street that ran along Virginia Gulch, George Ives paid fourteen dollars a week for board and lodging at the Missouri House, one of Virginia City’s hastily erected log structures. It was into Ives’s room that Ives and nine men gathered. There was Prinz, Vick, Stem, Hadsell, Aten, Dyer, Font, Mull, and Borg, all of whom were part of the infamous Plummer gang.

“Gents,” said Ives, “this won’t be close to home. We got to do some ridin’. We may be away two weeks or more.”

There was immediate grousing and cursing.

“Damn it,” Ives said, “it ain’t my doin’. There’s been vigilante talk, and Plummer’s got the jitters. You’ll all get a bigger share.”

“Hell,” said Prinz, “them miners ain’t goin’ nowhere anytime soon. There’s more snow comin’.”

“We don’t ride until the miners have a day’s start,” Ives said. “Plummer wants ‘em a hunnert miles away from here, before we relieve ’em of their gold. If they’re snowed in here, them wagons will be snowed in somewhere to the south of here. Just hole up with a bottle until the weather breaks. When them miners ride out with their gold, we follow.”
