The Problem with Using Corporate Planning Models in Nonprofits. There are a number of reasons corporate planning models don’t work well in nonprofits:• As Drucker pointed out, business planning begins with finances and nonprofit planning typically begins with mission.

• Nonprofits have different inputs (resources) and outputs (profit for corporations, but outputs that are more difficult to define for nonprofits).

• Nonprofits cannot afford the time and cost of formal corporate-style strategic planning. A typical planning process may take the better part of a year—all the while monopolizing the attention of staff and volunteers.

• In smaller nonprofits (most of them), traditional planning does not capitalize on their inherent strengths: agility, flexibility, and responsiveness to environment.

• Most traditional planning is not truly inclusive and disallows the greater number of nonprofit stakeholders.
