Chapter

Nick hadn’t been at headquarters in a while. He was a little surprised that Goblin had called the B Team into the office, considering there was a significant threat that they were, at the least, persons of interest to the FBI. But the boss had made the call.

Of course, comms had been less than stellar on their way across the country, with the whole team running on burners that they’d picked up along the way. There hadn’t been a good way to disseminate the new phone numbers, so most of the team had been isolated in teams of two or three, cut off from the others except for the office.

If they’d paused for more than an hour or so at a time, there would have been a way to coordinate more thoroughly. They’d been in a hurry, though, mostly switching drivers on the go and sleeping in the vehicles on the road.

There hadn’t been a time-sensitive mission to hit. They’d just wanted to put as much distance as possible between them and the FBI dragnet that was looking for them, as fast as possible.

Now that they were in Texas, Goblin was keeping them close, which seemed a bit counterintuitive to Nick, since he would have thought that publicly distancing the company from those potentially on a Most Wanted list would have been the more prudent course of action.

Frankly, it was making him nervous.

He hadn’t had the experience with Goblin that a few others working for the company had. He’d heard of him while he’d been working overseas, but he’d been working staff for the client by then. That meant that he wouldn’t have been someone that he’d trusted implicitly, anyway, even if he’d worked with him.

Saul trusted Goblin. He’d said emphatically that the boss wasn’t going to throw them under the bus. Nick trusted Saul, but it still gave him the willies.

Why would he bring the team with a bullseye on their backs to hang out right at ground zero? They already knew that the FBI was interested in PGS. They also didn’t know for sure that none of the B Team had been identified in New York and Connecticut. It was a decent bet that the cell phones had been the only tell, but it wasn’t airtight.

So, when three black Suburbans, about as stereotypical a “Fed” vehicle as possible, pulled up in front of the headquarters building, an unassuming brick block with “PGS” on a small sign on the door, Nick started to move for his weapons. Just in case.

Goblin saw it. “Relax, Nick. Everything’s under control.”

Nick tried, but despite Goblin’s reputation for being several steps ahead, he wasn’t all that confident. He intended to stay out of sight, nevertheless, and he was at least going to have his Glock 19 on him.

The Suburban doors opened, and at least half a dozen agents got out, all in suits instead of the expected slacks and windbreakers. The man in the lead was probably a good ten years younger than Goblin, but looked entirely self-assured as he walked up to the door.
