CHAPTER NINETEEN

“Vic, look, the generator!” Ivan gasped. Vic looked up. He was weary after their long trek and trying to get his head on straight after that weird…whatever the hell that noise was. As they entered a large cavern, nearly tripping over some old wiring as he did, he saw the large, cubed machine, only a slight hum and a few lights showing it was still active. They hurried over. Ivan pressed his hands against it. “Still in good shape. They send in a maintenance team only once a month, and they always seem to spend about half the time they need to work on it.”

“Can you blame them?” Vic pointed back the way they came. “Hard to focus on machine repairs when you feel like you’re going to hurl up your guts.”

Ivan opened one of the panels. “There is an emergency access card hidden in one of the rocks by the standing light in the corner.” He punched some of the buttons. “We’ll need it to deactivate the generator properly without setting off any alarms. Mind grabbing it real quick?”

Vic nodded and headed over. He probably should have asked for more specifics, but he was still not all with it. As he approached the light, shadows danced around him. He tried calming himself by stating it was simply the light warping around his body, but he could swear he heard something climbing along the cavern walls and ceiling. He checked a couple of the larger rocks until he found one that felt hollow.

He turned it over, finding a small compartment underneath. He unscrewed the latch and popped it open, taking out the card as he heard some rubble fall off the walls. It’s from the shocks coming from the mining in the main chamber. Keep it together man. He tossed the fake rock aside and hustled back over to Ivan, who took the card from him with nothing more than a nod, still focused on the work he was doing at the panel.

A couple of the small generators began to power down, along with some of the lights. “We’re not turning everything off in here, are we?” Vic turned the bright vision in his goggles back on.

“Everything will lose power for a moment when we shut off the main generator, but I’ll have the smaller power sources come back on so the area doesn’t suddenly blackout. If any of those aliens are looking at a power map, that will look suspicious,” Ivan explained.

His friend nodded. “Yeah, all right, that sounds smart.” At this point, there wasn’t much he could do except for any busy work Ivan asked him to. Working on machines like these wasn’t his strong suit. Right now would be a good time to hunker down and think of a way to bring in the creatures from below to the Komran.

He had the basic idea down, but now that he got a little taste of what they could do, he wasn’t so sure they could make it back to the main area without succumbing to that noise of theirs.
