When Thomas awoke, hours later, he did so alone. His neck and back were sore from lying on the carpet. And judging from both the intensity of the aches and the hue of the light sneaking past the window blinds, heâd been doing so for hours. He sat up, yawned, then froze when his mind finally woke enough to grasp the implications. He glanced around, muttered a curse, and climbed slowly to his feet.
Agave had gone, just as Mela had vanished once their coupling was complete.
âSuccubi,â he grumbled. A one-night-stand was one thing, disappearing without even saying goodbye was quite another.
He made his way to the bathroom without thinking. He was already in need of a shower. And even if Agave was correct and the Ilium Regia was weakening, he wasnât about to risk the next of Helenaâs friends arriving to find him rank with the aftermath of his time with Agave.
The shower turned on as he stepped into the unlit bathroom. And, in his sleep-muddled state, it took Thomas a second longer to backpedal in alarm than it ought to have. He fumbled for the light switch, flipped it, and was rewarded with a momentary glimpse of pale, slender limbs and dark, flowing hair before the shower curtain was yanked shut.
The woman on the other side yelped, her voice partially muffled by the running water.
âTurn the light off!â she demanded, audibly flustered.
Thomas reached for the switch and was about to obey when the realization struck him and he paused. âI will,â he said. âBut who are you?â
âOff!â the woman repeated. Her voice had grown urgent, almost shrill in its desperation.
Thomas sighed, retreated a step, and flipped the lights. No sooner had he done so than the curtain was drawn open once more. The bathroom was dark, but enough light filtered in from the other room for him to just make out the barest details of the nude figure before him. The sight matched his first, fleeting impression to a tee.
The woman was slender, raven-haired, and glaring at him with a mixture of smugness and indignation.
âWhatâs the matter?â she asked. âNever seen a succubus before?â
Yet again, Thomas sighed.
