Chapter 11

The Pentagram looked like a tornado that was arcing up towards the rip. By now the fighters and mages who had been attacking Oradhur spotted it and were flying around it, also wondering what to do. But they also knew they couldn’t touch it, couldn’t even approach it without suffering horrific destruction. The mages blasted off a few spells in the hope they could stop it from reaching the hole, but even their most powerful incantations sparked off it without stopping or even slowing its inexorable path. Some of the celestials shot at it, but their arrows dissipated before they could strike it.

The weres bared their teeth and flexed their claws in frustration. But then they realised the strange twister was veering off to the left, not heading directly for the screaming face of Necronis after all. It was aiming for the left-hand side of the breach near the top, and struck the edge with a mighty flash and shower of sparks. Then it began to stretch across the width of the rift, heading steadily towards the right-hand side.

What on Earth was it doing? It wasn’t flying through the Wall of Fire after all, but appeared to be drawing a straight line across it. It must have been something good, because Necronis the Unmaker looked even more infuriated; single eye now completely red and glaring, more blood streaming from the gaping wound on his face, fangs flashing, forked tongue flickering. Veins seemed to be popping from all over the Dark God’s face and arms now as he strained to pull the rift wider.

Now the defenders realised it wasn’t their imagination after all. The gap really was shrinking. Rhys and his Pentagram were doing it. They were really doing it!

The swirling, multi-coloured tornado struck the other side of the rift with a second shower of electricity and then began to move downwards. It looked, for all the world, like it was drawing something. But none of the watchers, unable to tear their eyes from the bizarre sight, could figure out what it was.

“Come on people, it’s not over yet!” commanded Professor Longenfang. “Keep watch, make sure nothing’s coming to stab us in the back!” He looked around, but the large demons who’d attacked before were hanging back, looking uncertain. Occasionally one would throw itself at the extending whirlwind that was the Pentagram – and suffer the inevitable, final disintegration. Obviously whatever the configuration was up to, it hadn’t been commanded by Necronis.

The defenders had a reprieve. The trouble was, what did they do with it? They couldn’t attack Necronis directly, and they didn’t want to waste fire on the demons, who weren’t doing anything other than milling around.

“Something’s up, but what?” wondered Toby.

Alice flexed her fingers. “Is everyone still protected? If anyone’s spells have run out, we should reinforce them, make sure we’re ready for whatever comes next.”

“Good idea,” said Dr Ashe, and he cracked his knuckles.

Alice and the mages worked up the most powerful protection spells they knew; that would proof against projectile attacks, close-range attacks, spells, fire and cold.
