Thirteen

Ethan stood next to Brad Foley and a few of the other guys from his unit, but he couldn’t concentrate on their conversation. Jenks was currently regaling the guys with stories of his newest conquests. Normally, he’d be right there with the others, making fun of Jenks, but Ash was on his mind something fierce.

Ash was across the driveway from them, bravely spending time with some of the other wives. Her dark hair curled around her shoulders, covering what the tank top didn’t. Her jeans had holes a tank could drive through, giving him a glimpse of her lean, tanned legs beneath the fabric. She wasn’t wearing shoes, but most of them weren’t.

They hadn’t planned on hanging out with people tonight. They’d gone for a walk together on the beach after Corwin had gone to sleep and when they’d come back, everyone was out there. They’d stopped to say hi, but invariably had gotten caught up.

He needed to sit her down, hammer out a new agreement between them. This was supposed to be a partnership, one that was beneficial to both of them, but so far, the only things he’d accomplished were making her cry and confusing the hell out of himself.

“Hey, Kearney!” Foley punched him.

“Ow! Dude!” He rubbed his arm, frowning. “What the hell?” He frowned and shot Foley an annoyed look.

“You’re so pussy-whipped, man.” Foley laughed. “It’s almost creepy how much you watch her.”

“I’m not staring,” he said. He scowled at all three of them, from Foley to Jenkins, to Norris.

Foley smirked.

Jenkins’ shit-eating grin turned into a wide smile. Norris’s lean frame leaned back on the back of the lawn chair he’d pulled from the garage. He wore a graphic tee that said “My boxer ate your boxer” with a picture of a snarling boxer puppy that had a guy wearing boxing gloves in his mouth. His lips quirked upward.

“I’m not staring!” All three had big asshole grins on their faces. “Fucking bastards.”

“Whatever, man,” Jenkins said to Foley. “If I had a wife that looked like her, I’d stare at her too.”

“Yeah, but you’d be staring to make sure she didn’t run away from your ugly ass,” Foley said. “You might let her out in irons to weigh down her escape.”

“Man, fuck you!” Jenkins flipped him off and grabbed his beer. “I could have a looker like Kearney’s wife if I wanted.”

“And yet, for some reason, you prefer the Coyote Uglies?” Ethan asked.

The others roared in laughter again, pulling in confused glances from the women across the driveway. Ash zeroed in on him, a perplexed, but amused expression on her face. He looked at his friends. “Look, Ash is great. I got no complaints.”

“Yeah, all the complaints would be on her end. Have you seen at your ugly mug in the mirror, Kearney?” Foley tossed him another beer. He caught it and popped the cap off with a fizzle and a pop. “Fuckin’ scary shit.”

Ethan flipped him off.

“Probably not,” Norris said. “He would break that shit.”

Jenks grinned big. “Mirror, mirror on the wall.
