The next day, Madeline’s mind still reeled as she let the PI inside and introduced her to Brandon. Had her attack indeed been connected to the decades-old crime? Had someone felt threatened because she set things in motion?

Of course, the new dynamic of her relationship with Brandon rattled her much worse. How could he mislead her like that?

With her new reality so shaky, he’d been the only stable thing left. She’d thought they’d walked on common ground. Instead, she’d been walking on ice that threatened to break. His betrayal already felt like icy water numbed her limbs, made it hard to function. Both men dear to her had betrayed her.

What was wrong with her?

Her past was a mystery. Now so was her present.

Brandon touched her forearm in silent support as they walked to the living room, and she had to remind herself not to lean in his direction. She’d grown so used to relying on him that she needed him like air. But a lie had polluted the air she’d considered fresh and clear.

He did have good intentions, though. But thinking like that could make her slip and go under the ice.

She had to stay in the moment. She had to concentrate on the investigation she’d started.

The private investigator was nothing like she’d expected. But her idea of PIs was based on the noir movie she and Brandon had recently seen together.

Jenna looked more like a femme fatale than the middle-aged man in a fedora and trench coat. She drew immediate attention with electric-blue eyes and a tall, slim body hugged by a fashionable white pantsuit. The elegant diamond-shaped buckle on the belt cinching her ensemble tight somehow matched the chunky earrings dangling beneath her short jet-black hair. Even shorter than Jessie wore hers, Jenna’s hair offered a striking contrast to those eyes, and long bangs swept to the side gave it a stylish cut.

Madeline did her best to ignore a sting of envy. While she liked expensive clothes in no particular order, Jenna had a unique fashion style that somehow looked effortless. Madeline had done a little research about Jenna yesterday, but she didn’t have to go far.

Since Brandon knew Jenna, who was a local, Madeline had reluctantly probed him as her source of information. Jenna was born on the neighboring ranch and was the veterinarian Liberty’s sister. Unlike her siblings, Jenna had lived in Europe for a long time and worked there as an art theft investigator. Since coming home, she’d married her family’s ranch foreman and adopted the nephew he’d been raising, all after she’d solved his sister’s murder and rescued his nephew. This woman was remarkable in more than her appearance.

Now Jenna and her husband had a toddler. Together with two other women in their large family, Jenna had formed an all-female detective agency. Based on the online reviews, they had a great reputation.

Once again, the image didn’t mesh with Madeline’s already preconceived notion of a private investigator, but she did her best not to be sexist.
