CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT

Behind me, I heard Toni ask, “Shouldn’t we go with him?”

“Not yet,” Warren replied. “If we hang back, he knows he won’t have to worry about us getting involved or getting hurt.”

“But he’s alone,” Toni blurted.

“Yep. That’s how he wants it,” Warren acknowledged.

“We’re going to do nothing?”

“No,” John stated. “He gave us a job. We’re going to call the police so they can come clean up.”

If they talked further, I didn’t hear. I was out of range. They were right, though. I couldn’t protect them and do whatever I was supposed to do at the same time.

I came upon three guys stomping a fourth. He was trying to curl into a ball and cover his head, but they were stomping everywhere, so it didn’t matter.

“So you didn’t learn anything since the last time we talked.” I had to speak louder than I liked to be heard over the noise of the beating.

The one I had whupped before, still wearing a denim vest and a Harley Davidson tee shirt, turned to face me. “Hey, I remember you. I owe you a beating.”

The other two left the man on the ground. “Where’s your mommy?” one asked. Last time I saw him, he was wearing a black leather jacket.

“I gave her the night off. I told her there wouldn’t be enough action to make it worth coming out.” I walked farther down the alley, hoping they’d follow me and allow John, Warren, and Toni to do the other part of their job. To help the victim. Bullies are predictable, and they did follow me. After we were away from their victim, I turned and faced them.

“It’s okay.” Leather Jacket sneered. “She can find you at the hospital.”

“Actually, she’s already there. With another one of your beating victims.” I flexed my fingers. “You know, I don’t like your current M.O. any better than I did the one you tried to use at the bird sanctuary the last time I saw you.” I chuckled. “If I remember right, you had to help your buddy walk when I finished.” My arms were loose at my sides, and my feet were about shoulder-width apart. “The question this time is, are you two losers going to participate or wait around to pick him up again?”

“There’s more than three of us, you know.” The third one had been wearing the Vikings sweatshirt.

“Yeah, your buddy keeping watch? He split already,” I told them. “He saw me, heard my suggestion, and displayed some brains. He went looking for new friends. I mean…he had enough sense not to think beating up homeless people was a good idea. What do you expect to get? They have nothing.”

They had moved into a semi-circle, probably how they approached their prey.

“They have more than you think,” Harley Davidson offered. “And they need to share.”

“Not anymore. This is the end.”

The two at the ends of the semi-circle attacked, feet first. I caught the foot of the one on my left and used his leg to block a kick from the one on the right.
