Chapter Sixteen

Ricki handed her rifle to Anchorman and blew out a long breath, letting it whistle between her teeth. Getting to her feet, she stretched her arms high over her head before dropping them and placing her hands on her hips. She tilted her head to the side as Gin stood as well.

“The story is that someone was shooting at us. Or to be more accurate, two people were shooting at us.”

Gin unknowingly echoed the same question Anchorman had asked. “Are you sure?”

With her eyes glued on the closed doors leading into the clinic, Ricki nodded. “I saw two flashes. One on the left, and a later one on the right. There’s no chance one shooter could have relocated through the trees that fast without me spotting some movement in my scope. And I didn’t see any.”

“I saw one guy heading southwest,” Anchorman said from his sitting position on the sidewalk. He lifted his gaze to Ricki’s. “He was far enough away that I can’t be sure, but I think he was limping.”

Ricki’s gaze met his and turned sharp. “You hit him?”

“Someone did. We need to get back out there and look around.”

“Once I’m sure Clay is going to be all right.” When Anchorman opened his mouth again, Ricki cut him off. “And you aren’t going out there alone. That isn’t up for negotiation.”

Her cook’s mouth flattened into a thin line. “You don’t own the land.”

“No, but you are part of my team,” she said evenly. “And we go out and take a look around together. Along with Jules.” Ricki swiftly held up her hand when she saw the instant protest in Anchorman’s eyes. “Because Clay will need one of his deputies to take that walk through, and we are not sending Jules out there alone. So we do things in order.” She pushed several strands of long dark hair hanging down her cheek back behind her ear. “Jules needs to be notified. And I have to call my boss and let him know what’s going on. I’ll let Jules break the news to the mayor and city council that their police chief might be out of commission for a while. I’m betting that somewhere between here and the vet in Edington, Tipper puts in a call to Andre.”

“What reason are you going to give all the local VIPs about why their chief of police was shot?” Gin asked. “Out of all those calls you listed, only your boss knows about Lex. Unless Clay told Andre about his brother?” She sent Ricki a questioning look.

Ricki sighed and shoved the last strand of stray hair away from her face.” I don’t know what Andre has or hasn’t been told, but as for the local community, only Bill Langly knows about Lex, and for now, I’m only going to give everyone else the bare facts. At this point all we know for sure is there were two shooters, lying in wait near my cabin, and they were aiming at Clay out on that porch.
