When I arrive home at eleven o’clock, saddled with an even larger case load, when I was already overly burdened before Chad’s departure from the firm, I find Chad in bed, sleeping. He turns over to hold me tight, but I’m so exhausted, I can’t even find it in my heart to show him more attention than a reciprocating cuddle. He smells so fresh and clean, and his body is so soft yet sturdy enough to protect me, that I wish like hell that I had the energy to do what seems like ions ago that we did.

And just as I drift off to sleep, I hear Chad’s phone ringing from the nightstand. He lurches out of bed, as my heart skips a beat. With one swift movement, he picks up the call. “Chuck.” He says breathlessly. He swallows, and in the silence, I can hear his little brother’s voice break. Chad’s voice is so low I almost can’t hear it. “I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

All my beloved says to me are three words. Unfortunately, they’re not the same three words that I’ve been dying to hear from him for the last few weeks. Chad mutters. “I’m sorry, baby.”
