Chapter 10

Summer

I wake up and what to my wandering eyes should appear? Chase laying next to me in bed. He’s sound asleep and looks ten years younger with his eyes closed. Eyelashes sweeping across his cheeks, fingers curled next to his face. All curled up in a ball next to me, over the sheets, completely clothed. My head pounds as I blink, and I’m afraid to move, not only to wake Chase, but also because I’m not sure how my stomach feels.

Somehow, I’m locked in place, and then I realize that it’s because Chase’s other arm is under me, seemingly keeping me from rolling over. I’m inches from his face, and as much as my head hurts, I feel like I can stay here forever. He’s so warm and safe, and his large body envelops mine as he keeps me safe. For a moment, I allow myself to pretend that we’re a couple, and that whole stupidness with Michael never happened, and instead, Chase and I have been together this whole time.

The fantasy is short-lived, when Chase opens his eyes, and reality hits. My breath must be atrocious, and I know that I look like hell, and I’m laying in bed with my boss. “How do you feel?” he asks softly, searching my face.

“I don’t know yet.”

“I don’t think there’s a drop left in you. You’re good.” He assures. “I’ve seen drunken men bigger than me throw up less than you did. I wasn’t sure where it was coming from.”

“I should’ve known better.”

He looks at me fairly. I notice that he hasn’t moved from his position, and I wonder if he’s afraid to, or if he hasn’t noticed that he’s holding me close to him. “It’s okay. You’re allowed.” I give him a tight smile. He uses his free hand to brush a lock of hair off my shoulder. “Nancy would be proud.”

“Who’s Nancy?”

“The waitress at the restaurant last night. The one that kept feeding you the wine.”

“Oh.” I swallow, looking down, apologetically.

“It’s okay. I didn’t leave her a tip.” He winks. Then he gently pulls his arm out from under me and turns over. There is a glass of water and two bottles on the nightstand. “I found these last night. You want an Advil and a Gravol?”

“Sure.”

He helps me drink them down and lays back down next to me, propping his head on his hand as his elbow lays on the pillow. “Thanks for staying with me last night. You didn’t have to.”

“I wasn’t about to leave you in the state that you were in, Summer. You were really sick.” He explains.

“Thanks all the same. I asked for it.”

He’s looking at me with a strange expression. “Is everything okay? Are we okay?”

“We’re fine.” He says, scrunching his face softly. “Nothing happened, Summer. I wouldn’t have let it.”

My gaze is downcast. “I know.”

He lifts my chin with his finger. “Hey. You didn’t do anything wrong, nor did we.” He licks his lips. “I think the lines have been blurred some, but that’s okay, Summer.
