Chapter 10

Hawk

If I told her how much I wanted to hold her, she’d probably run faster than when she saw the damn rattlesnake. It felt better than anything else in the world, and that includes the day I won my first horse race. The way she melted into me, man, it was something else. It meant the world to me that she finally trusts me. I suppose saving her life, as she put it, made a difference, but really, it was nothing. I’ve shot so many things it’d make your head spin.

We trot back to the ranch, and mama’s upstairs in the bathtub, and the boys have gone for a ride, just like we were when we were out. They must have gone out towards the railroad tracks, because we never crossed paths. I haven’t taken Lu over that way yet, but I will. “You want something to drink?” I offer.

“No, I’m fine.” She says.

“Hey, I’ve never shown you the guesthouse. You want to go see it?”

She nods. “Sure.”

We head back outside. The guesthouse is off to the side, away from the barn and the stable. It’s almost tucked away, like a neighbor. We designed it that way, so that anyone who came to stay with us, would have proper privacy. We also have a house where ranch hands can stay, but it never gets used, either. Both houses are kept up nice, though, and they’ve both been used in the past, just not in the last while. The house is like a small cottage, not like the hand house, where it’s just bedrooms and a common area with a living/dining room and a common bathroom area.

Mama keeps fresh flowers and shrubbery all over, so it’s welcoming. The porch is just in the front, not a wraparound, like at the main house. It’s basically the main house, but in a smaller scale, and it’s cuter. “This…is your guest house?” Luellen asks, impressed.

“Yes.” I smile. “Why?” We’re not even inside yet. But like I said, this house is off to the side. You almost can’t see it from the pasture.

“Well…it’s beautiful. This puts my house to shame.”

“We take pride in our things, I suppose.”

“I’ll say.”

We have one of those fancy code keys instead of just a key lock on the door, so I punch in the code and we enter. There’s lots of wood in the house, so you get a whiff of it as soon as you enter. I enter the security code into the panel, shutting the alarm off, and I leave the door open, to let the place air out a bit. “You have security here, but not in the main house?” she asks.

“Well, yeah, I mean, nobody’s hardly here.”

“So no guns nearby.” She says, and the ghost of a smile comes to her face.

I chuckle softly. “No. And that’s exactly why we have security here. But we rigged it to our phones, instead of to the security company. So, if anyone ever tries to bust in, we’re alerted first.
