In the Reality-Based Leadership/Futures Survey, 23 percent of the drama that leaders reported as creating waste in the workplace stemmed from the time they invested in dealing with issues of low accountability. Items included:

• Dealing with employees who blame challenging circumstances for their lack of results

• Encouraging resilience among employees

• Dealing with a lack of ownership or accountability among employees for their results

The survey identified lack of accountability as one of the top five sources of drama and causes of workplace emotional waste. In the next chapter, we’ll take a deeper look at the ways ego gets in the way of accountability and how to bypass it to drive higher engagement and results.
