“I knew you wouldn’t desert me.”

Skye adjusted the bag of ice on her hand and stared at Tag, who was still sprawled across her bed. “Not everything is about you.”

Oh Tag was involved, but whoever had hidden under the skull mask had said her name.

She flexed her fingers under the ice and winced. Maybe the stomped-on hand had been an accident, but she’d been corralled and delivered to a spot where that particular skeleton could harass her. Someone had to be pretty devious to coordinate anything in such a mob. Which eliminated Noah Nash. He’d been too drunk when he’d issued the invitation for her to join his guests to be able to pull off something quite as precise as the parade incident had felt.

“I couldn’t find your car.”

“I parked on Burgundy,” Tag said. He looked a little better than he had when she’d left for the airport.

“I couldn’t find it. I brought your keys back. I guess I’m stuck here for the night. I’ll call a cab in the morning.”

“What happened to your hand?”

She told him about her unplanned foray to the Krewe D’Etat parade.

“I wasn’t parked anywhere near Canal Street,” he said when she’d finished.

“I’ll look again before I head to the airport tomorrow.” There she went, trying to appease him again.

“I don’t want you to leave.”

Skye stared at him. If he’d sprouted a third head, she couldn’t be more surprised. “Why?”

“I feel…outnumbered here. You, you’re on my side.”

She opened her mouth to contradict him, but he didn’t let her speak.

“Who else is going to make sure my food isn’t spiked with steroids?”

“I’m scared.” That was a good enough of a reason for her. She was tired of putting other people’s needs ahead of her own. Maybe selfish, but true.

“I’ll protect you. Haven’t I watched out for you in the past? You and I—we’re good at taking care of each other.”

He had. Even wheelchair-bound, he’d taken care of Drake Dixon and his unwanted advances.

“Staying isn’t a good idea.” The thought of Dixon resurfacing wasn’t the only thing that scared her. The intensity of her feelings for Tag weren’t exactly comforting.

“I thought we decided a couple of months ago we’re on the same team?” Tag reminded her.

“We are. But how often have you and a pitcher gone at it about what pitch he should throw?”

“I can’t sit in my apartment. I’ll go insane.”

“How is that different from what you are doing here? I don’t see you out carousing with Noah. And you’re putting way too much strain on your leg.”

“So now you’re my physical therapist as well as my cook?”

“Not your cook. Your friend. I thought.”

But he didn’t believe her about Dixon. Tag knew what kind of hound dog Dixon was. Had even tried to warn her before she’d catered the Halloween party for him. Had rescued her from what probably would have been rape.

“Why do you have a bug up your butt about Terra’s contention that Dixon is in New Orleans? You’re the one who taught me trust my instincts.
