Given the good, the bad, and the ugly, I still stand by what I implied but didn’t explicitly say earlier: partnering with the right collaborators can produce amazing results and provide an exhilarating injection of energy and innovation in whatever you do. Is it worth it? Depending on your business and who you are, with well-chosen partners my answer would generally be a resounding yes. Just proceed with caution! And thoughtfully put guardrails on an excess of uncompensated time. Discuss this ahead to raise your partner’s consciousness, and you’ll still need to remind them along the way. Otherwise even with the best intentions they may not even realize the impact of overcommunicating with you or asking too much—especially when they’re drawing salaried paychecks and may never have been on their own. Finally, when in doubt, err in the direction of protecting your reputation and sanity even if that sometimes means saying no to a project that you want but can’t do alone.

Whether you’re always working alone, or sometimes with partners, you’ll still need to evaluate your own performance. So now we move on to that tricky business in Lesson 8.
