Chapter 9

Shifting morning light danced across Ayne’s eyelids rousing her from her dreams. She yawned and sat up groggily, rubbing the sleep from her eyes; then looking around it took a moment for her to figure out where she was. The room she had found herself in was in was circular, it had an arched door that led to a balcony that was set into tree branches, so the dancing lights that had woken her up had been the last remnants of leaves in the treetops against her window. The walls and floors were made of white wood that seemed seamless as if the room she was in was made of the tree itself, as was most of the larger furniture. The bed she woke up in was round as well to match the shape of the space and covered in soft blankets and furs. Kiorn had had no problem sleeping on the lounge, which acted as the centerpiece for the sitting area in the room and made that extremely clear the night before by throwing himself onto the plush furniture and falling asleep almost instantly. Unfortunately not fast enough to miss hearing an invitation to a brunch with the royal family, and much to Kiorn’s displeasure, the servants made it exceedingly clear that refusing would serve no purpose but offend their hosts, and after their adventures, that night with Tailon neither wanted to risk that. But neither was ready to face him again either.

A knock on the tree house’s glass door brought Kiorn back to the present, and a tall female elf whose black hair was pulled back into a severe braid that was so long that it hit the floor stepped in uninvited.

“Is the girl here?” she barked, her voice was much harsher than Kiorn had expected. He nodded and pointed at the
