The only place left to go was back, I thought, back across the border. I had returned to the apartment despite Violet’s warning. I stitched shut the wound in my shoulder as best I could and slept, waking to the sunrise, my sheets and pillow bloodied, the images of Elina’s face behind my eyes.

On the doorstep, I found a newspaper. The wars still raged. Soldiers on every side continued to die, as did civilians. A school bus had been targeted. There was a picture of its burned-out husk. Below that was an article about a dead woman. The body had been found near the train station. The picture that accompanied the article showed Violet splayed out on the concrete. The image was gray and white, her blood looked black. A suspect had been brought in for questioning. There was a hole in her head.

The article, I realized, was a plant, a clue. It had been placed there by my superiors. Contained within was a secret message. I circled the second letter of every word and copied the letters into my notebook.

The secret message was this: You can never leave the Skin House.
