Raoul

Raoul caught sight of Christophe as he made his way across the floor. Raoul set his glass of wine down and walked towards him. He was dressed very fetchingly in a dress that made him look like a rabbit.

It wasn’t a surprise to Raoul, that Christophe had worn a dress. Even as a child he had always adored pretty things and never seemed to care if people thought it strange. He would wear what he liked, and the world could deal with it.

Raoul admired that about him.

He intercepted Christophe and took his hand. “You make a very beautiful bunny.”

Christophe’s eyes roamed up and down over Raoul’s costume and then settled on his face, the picture of confusion. “A knight?”

“It’s me, Raoul,” Raoul said. Christophe’s face broke into a wide smile.

“I’m so pleased to see you, I can’t recognise anyone.”

“I suppose it is rather the point of a Masquerade, but I’d rather you weren’t feeling confused.” Raoul pulled his own mask off and slipped it into his pocket. “Is that better?

“Much.” Christophe pulled back to strike a pose, showing off the tail on the dress and winking coquettishly over his shoulder. “How do I look?”

“Divine,” Raoul said. “Absolutely gorgeous, sweetheart.”

“Let’s dance,” Christophe said. He held his hand out to Raoul who kissed the back of it, and then led him onto the dance floor.

“Anything you wish for, you shall have,” Raoul said. He took Christophe in his arms and they began to dance. Raoul lost himself in Christophe’s huge eyes and was content. The world fell away and all that existed was the delicate man in his arms.

“This suits you,” Christophe said, after a time. “The shining armour, it fits your personality.”

“I daresay the rabbit suits you as well, but I don’t think you’re as timid as a rabbit,” Raoul said.

“Rabbits aren’t only timid,” Christophe said. “They are important in a lot of myths and stories. Did you know that the Japanese see a rabbit on the moon, not a man?”

“I didn't,” Raoul said.

“Lots of people say that rabbits are lucky, or that they inspire creativity,” Christophe continued, then broke into a giggle. “I don’t exactly know why I was so drawn to it, I just love them.”

Raoul leaned in and planted a soft kiss on Christophe’s tinted lips. “I like it, you’ve convinced me.”

Christophe laughed again, and Raoul thought that perhaps there was nothing he wouldn’t do to hear that sound for the rest of his life.

Christophe’s hand wandered on Raoul’s shoulder, tugging his costume aside and dipping a finger underneath to touch the leather collar. Raoul couldn’t suppress the way his body shivered at the reminder.

“I like you. And I have spoken with Matthieu, he is… considering. I am so excited at the prospect.” Christophe tugged on the collar with one finger and giggled at the way Raoul’s eyes fluttered. He let go of the collar and wrapped his arms tight around Raoul’s shoulders. “I want to know everything Eric has planned for us.”

Raoul licked his lips, adjusted his hold on Cristophe’s waist and smiled when his fingers found the soft fur.
