Before earning her MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts, Mary Rickert worked as a kindergarten teacher, a coffee shop barista, a balloon vendor at Disneyland, and in the personnel department of Sequoia National Park, where her time off was spent “bagging” peaks. She has published numerous short stories.

Her first novel, The Memory Garden, was published in 2014 and won the Locus Award for Best First Novel. She is the winner of the Crawford Award and the World Fantasy Award for her collection Map of Dreams. She also won the World Fantasy Award for her short story “Journey into the Kingdom” and the Shirley Jackson Award for her short story “The Corpse Painter’s Masterpiece.”
