A Missing Link
We sit in a circle, in the vast space lit only by the Darklight from the Nether outside the walls, each of us cross-legged on the ends of our sleeping bags. None of us want to be the first to talk.
Since Iâm the one with the most obvious answer, I pull the Band-Aid off fast and go first. âYou guys know why I canât chance getting kicked out. Iâll go to jail for murder andâ¦for blowing up a jail.â
Why had Abbadon done that to me? The murder part was bad enough. Escaping from jail by way of explosion had to add a whole extra life sentence or something. Couldnât he have been more discreet about it?
âBlowing up a jail?â Rhiannonâs jaw drops.
âYou didnât hear that part?â Mandy asks, gripping her ankles and leaning forward. âTwo police officers died.â
My stomach hits the floor. âWhat?â
Mandy nods. âWall fell on them. You havenât been keeping up?â
âNo.â My tongue is as dry as sandpaper. âI guess I havenât been eagerly consuming the details of the murder I committed.â
âWhere are you even hearing this stuff, anyway?â Rhiannon asks in disgust. âItâs not like youâre reading Twitter on your phone in here.â
Mandy raises her hands and dramatically looks all around. âGosh, I donât know where I would have heard anything about the outside world?â
âYou know all of my business,â I snap, not wanting a side argument to knock us off track. âWhat about yours? Why canât you leave?â
âJail. Same as you,â Mandy says with a shrug. Then she tilts her head and adds, âWell, not the same. I didnât rip anybodyâs heart out. I just stole a car.â
âWhy doesnât that surprise me?â Rhiannon mutters under her breath.
âSo, you stole a car. Miss Perkins knows about this?â I donât want to assume. I want straight answers.
âShe doesnât just know. Sheâs the one who got me out of there.â Mandy sounds almost proud of that. âShe pretended to be a social worker. Waltzed right in to the juvenile detention center, said she was taking me to a facility for evaluation and brought me here.â
âShe pretended to be a social worker when she came for me, too,â Rhiannon says, sitting up a little taller.
I look between Rhiannon and Mandy. âDoes she personally pick up all the girls?â
Mandy shakes her head. âNo. Just the ones whose Sentinels go AWOL.â
Abbadon. Understanding dawns on me. âThe people who were supposed to be looking out for us.â
âNot people, but yes,â Rhiannon confirms. âMine must have vanished.â
âWhy do you say âmust haveâ?â Mandy asks. âI know where mine went.â
âBecause I have no idea who my Sentinel was.â Something about Rhiannonâs answer feels overly cautious. Mandy and I just stare at her until she goes on. âLook, I didnât grow up the way you guys did, okay?â
âNot okay. You donât have any idea how I grew up,â Mandy says, and I sense that itâs the wind up to a long screed about white privilege that Rhiannon and I wonât want to hear.
But Rhiannon sticks to her guns.
