CHAPTER 34
âWhat in tarnation is she doing?â
Sara was sitting on the floor, lotus style, eyes closed, hands on her knees, palms up.
âDoing her own body scan,â Dagger said. âSara is very in tune with her body.â
âShush.â Sara took several deep breaths and focused. She started at the top of her head and worked her way down. She would be able to feel for any foreign object, no matter how small, no matter how undetectable to machines. The soft hum from the small refrigerator in the corner of the office didnât bother her. She was able to block out all mundane noises and focus. Even if a tiny transmitter had been inserted under her skin, within a week her body would have pushed the foreign object to the surface.
Finally Sara opened her eyes. âMother was telling the truth. They only took my blood.â Sara rose from the floor and walked over to the desk.
âAnd why exactly would they want girlieâs blood?â Skizzyâs one eye leveled on Sara while the other wobbled in Daggerâs direction.
Dagger hesitated just a little too long trying to come up with a believable excuse without revealing Saraâs shapeshifting abilities.
Skizzyâs eyes widened. âHoly shit, Batman. They want to clone her. Right?â
âYou obviously took a conspiracy pill today.â Dagger changed the subject by mentioning how Mother appeared as a hologram.
âAnd she just went whoosh.â Skizzy swept his hand in the air. âJust like in Nebraska, huh? Weird shit, man. Weirder shit yet are those paintings.â
âWhich reminds me, Sara and I are going to Sturgis, Michigan tomorrow morning to look up birth records in the basement of the Fayette Hospital.â A flashing green light appeared as if it were floating near his eye. âThe boss lady calls.â
âCalls?â Skizzy asked.
Dagger logged onto the laptop while he explained the green light to Sara and Skizzy.
âJeez, I hope the old bat pays you well if youâre on call twenty-four seven.â
Immediately, a monitor hovered over the desk and a keyboard lit up.
âWow.â Skizzy moved closer, but Dagger raised a hand to stop him. He wasnât sure it was a good idea to have Connie aware that someone other than he and Sara were in the room.
âSix-One-Seven. Something just came up on the Directorâs computer.â
âI didnât see it.â
âPerhaps you were too busy trying to pulverize Two-Fifty-Eight.â When Dagger gave a puzzled look, Connie added, âThe man you know as Casey.â A photo appeared on the screen. âWe arenât sure who he is or why the Director is interested in him. For some reason this man is targeted. Perhaps you can look into it.â
âNo need,â Dagger said. âI know him. Heâs Mark Logan. He just opened an art gallery in Cedar Point.â
